Bread and Butter Kitchen | Our Story
From the boardroom to Second Street
Bread and Butter Kitchen is Monica Alvarado's answer to a simple question: what if work felt as good as cooking? She opened this café on the Eastport waterfront in 2016, and it's been serving breakfast and lunch seven days a week ever since.
From technology to the kitchen
In 2012, Monica Alvarado took a sabbatical from a long career in technology and rediscovered her passion for cooking. She started a blog interviewing local Annapolis farmers, and over time realized the kitchen was where she wanted to be — so she left to open Bread and Butter Kitchen.
Local farmers, in every plate
Monica works directly with local farmers and vendors to source the best ingredients available each season, and the menu shifts to reflect what's fresh and close by. Those relationships aren't a backdrop — they're the reason the food tastes the way it does.
Eastport, at the end of Second Street
The café sits right on the water at 303 Second Street, with indoor and outdoor seating and a view that makes it easy to linger over lunch. Boaters can dock at the end of 2nd or 3rd Street and walk straight over — no car needed.
A table for everyone
The menu includes gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options at both breakfast and lunch, and the team is always happy to customize for dietary needs. If you have a question about what's in a dish, just ask — that's the whole point of a kitchen with a real person running it.
